Neil Jordan will direct Saoirse and Gemma Arterton in vampire ‘Byzantium’

Is Saoirse Ronan the latest young talent to be cloned so that she can be attached to many projects at once? That appears to be the case. She’s already scheduled for The Host, may be in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina and Emma Thompson’s Effie, and the latest is a film called Byzantium, a ‘mother-daughter’ vampire tale co-starring Gemma Arterton that Neil Jordan will direct.

The news is that the film is based on an original script by Moira Buffini, who scripted the recent version of Jane Eyre, and is about “a mother vampire who turns her own daughter into a vampire and the pair form a lethal partnership, sometimes posing as sisters.” The script is based on her own play A Vampire Story, and we reported on the play-to-film conversion back in 2009.

Neil Jordan, of course, got in on the vampire craze before there was a vampire craze, directing Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a then-unknown Kirsten Dunst in the not-so-great Anne Rice adaptation Interview With the Vampire. He was also ahead of the current fairy tale craze with The Company of Wolves in 1984. In fact, this film will be produced by The Company of Woolves producer Stephen Wooley.

Artemis Fowl Film Attracts Director Jim Sheridan and Star Saoirse Ronan

Brendon Connelly from Bleeding Cool talks about a new supposed Saoirse´s project. But it´s just a rumor of course.. Check out!

Eoin Colfer has described his Artemis Fowl novels as “Die Hard with fairies”. I’ve never read them, but I just ran that description past a former student of mine who has and she said “Okay, I suppose, if he says so”. She added that the books are named after their lead character, who’s like “the anti-Harry Potter”, and described him as a rather winning young master crook at large in a fantasy version of our world.

With a pitch like that, I’m not too surprised there’s a big screen adaptation in the works. Yet, according Colfer, who was speaking to the Irish Independent‘s Weekend Review, director Jim Sheridan is currently ” in LA, trying to get it unblocked”.

The problem, apparently, is “the format of the movie” – which might mean they’re arguing about how many books worth of story to squeeze into one film, or if they end on a cliffhanger or a happy ending with every bow tied neatly. These were arguments that the filmmakers behind, for example, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings and The Spiderwick Chronicles all had to go through.

Sheridan previously directed My Left Foot and In The Name of the Father, to give just two fine examples, and has Dream House with Daniel Craig coming along later in the year. I like most of his films a great deal, and all of them at least a little. And yes, that includes Get Rich or Die Trying, the 50 Cent film he was responsible for.

The same newspaper reported back in February that Saoirse Ronan took meetings with Sheridan about the role of Holly Short, a member of the elven law force. Colfer punningly calls these characters LEPRecons, or members of the Lower Element Police Reconnaissance. This week, the Irish Independent say, Colfer “wants” Ronan to take the role.

Well, who wouldn’t?

Here’s hoping Sheridan can break through the blockage. I’d also like to see him sign Ronan. She’s good, even in bad films.

Saoirse is not confirmed in ‘The Hobbit’!

Despite casting director Ros Hubbard making the claim last month that Saoirse Ronan has joined The Hobbit in an unspecified role, the young Irish actress has come forward to say that she hasn’t signed onto the project yet.

At this weekend’s Irish Film and Television Awards, Saoirse Ronan spoke for the first time about appearing in the The Hobbit. And she made it clear that nothing is official at this moment in time.

“No, nothing has actually been confirmed yet. I’d love to get a role in The Hobbit. I think everybody in the world would like a role in The Hobbit.”

Saoirse Ronan is rumored to be playing Itaril, a character that was created specifically for The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel. Itaril is described as a Silvan Elf chosen to become part of the Woodland King’s Guard.

The Hobbit comes to theaters November 2012 and stars Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman, Saoirse Ronan, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Doug Jones.

Saoirse confirmed in ‘The Hobbit’?

I’m not sure if this is really truth, but a lot of sites are talking about it, so I decided to publish here too.

According to ITFN, Saoirse Ronan is the latest addition to the cast of The Hobbit. Ronan and Jackson worked together before on The Lovely Bones, a film that really helped solidify Ronan as a fresh new talent in Hollywood. The film centered on a difficult subject, and it’s a mark of how well they got along that Ronan is eager to work with Jackson again.

ITFN didn’t specify Ronan’s role, but The Hobbit did have a casting call out for a female elf named Itaril, a member of the Woodland King’s Guard, who has to be “quick and lithe and physically adept, being able to fight with both sword and bow.”

We’re not sure if this is actually a legitimate character sheet, but since The Hobbit was rather short of women, it’s a strong possibility one would be invented for the film. Anyone who has seen the trailer for Ronan’s upcoming film Hanna knows she’s adept with a bow, so it’s a curious coincidence. Sure, she could have a cameo as Bilbo’s adventuring ancestress, Belladonna Took, but Ronan seems a little more elven than hobbit, don’t you think?

If there is any other news about it, we will post here asap!

New projects?

We haven´t the confirmation yet, so we’re putting the issue as a rumor: new projects for Saoirse´s career.

According to Deadline, Saoirse Ronan may join the cast of The Hobbit. She already worked with Jackson in the Lovely Bones adaptation.

And another one, more likely.. And I hope it´s true!

According to Production Weekly, 16 year old Saoirse Ronan is to play the title role in the Emma Thompson scripted “Effie” with Orlando Bloom, Greg Wise, Imelda Staunton and Thompson co-starring. Carey Mulligan was previously attached to this role. If true, Saoirse seems once again to be playing a role older than her years.

Written by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, “Effie” is a sharp, entertaining and witty story that vividly conjures up passionate characters driven to extremes by the repressive rules of their time.

Saoirse in ‘The Seven Rays’?

The book The Seven Rays by Jessica Bendiger is set to be turned into a movie, but who would be best for the lead role in the film? In a recent interview with IESB.net, Jessica said:

“I pictured Taylor Swift, intermittedly, just ‘cause she’s got such alien, exotic looks and that long blonde hair. I thought about Dakota Fanning, at one time, Saoirse Ronan and Selena Gomez. I love the idea of someone doing a successful hair or eye color change that really works. I find that fascinating. May the best woman win the part.”

Have you read The Seven Rays? Who do you think should get the part? You can vote for Saoirse here.

Saoirse and Carey Mulligan for Violet and Daisy

In a surprising move, three Hollywood players who have been nominated for Oscars based on their work in the drama category – Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), Carey Mulligan (An Education), and Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious) – are teaming up for Fletcher’s directorial debut, a black comedy called Violet and Daisy. His script is being described as a cross between Superbad, Pulp Fiction, and Thelma and Louise.

It definitely doesn’t sound like the most intuitive move for all three to shift to comedy, but then again, Ronan was a delight in The Lovely Bones not just for her scenes in the afterlife, but also for a series of one-liners as snarky teenager Susie.

The news comes from Showbiz 411, reporting the talk at “an elegant congratulatory party for Fletcher”. They’re careful to note that the film “may get a start this summer with two Oscar nominated actresses in the lead roles” and isn’t yet set in stone.

Do you think these three will make a good team?
